Hi. I am so sorry you had to go through that. The story made me angry on your behalf. So let me give you a universal comeback, one you can use for any idiot, and you never have to think of a new one. You turn, look at the person who made the inappropriate comment, and say "What did you say?" They're forced to repeat it. You look at them and say, "I thought that's what you said," and you turn away. This changes everything!
I’m sure off handed (?) comments like, ‘Why aren’t you married?’ or ‘Why don’t you have kids?’ happen all the time to a single woman, or so my ex told me, and it sounds awful. But people only do it because they are insecure and want justification for their miserable lives. Also, I couldn’t help but feel as I read this that Texas was in the stone age and no place for a free-thinker but you sound like a Gemini by living one life as a conservative schoolteacher and another as a “c*nt.”

“im aware of that” was a perfect response. i’d be like “what are you implying? i’m sorry you don’t know what friendly conversation looks like!” which is probably giving too much energy. tbh that the other teachers chimed in about other women supposedly flirting w their husbands is so telling of this as a male centered misogynistic clique. reminds me of that shirt that reads “NOT FLIRTING JUST HOT AND TALKING” lol. southern conservative religious women are the biggest haters of women i have ever met on par w actual rapists because they are always the ones defending them and slut shaming I SAID WHAT I SAID. later on i would for sure tell her what she said to you was inappropriate and unChristlike. but then again you don’t want to make an enemy of her, move jobs or states. this behavior just really needs to be curtailed. i promise any sane 3rd party would be on your side and not feel that you should be embarassed for a simple comment but that the clerk should be embarassed for her hostile sexism.
